Welcome to DanMahoneyOnInvesting.com!
In 2018, I watched Warren Buffett open the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting with a surprising lesson—not about Berkshire, but about how most people should invest.
He told the story of buying his first stock in 1942. Looking back, he said the best thing he—or anyone—could have done was to invest in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund.
If you had invested $10,000 in the S&P 500 back then, it would be worth over $131 million today—and you wouldn’t have had to do a thing. No stock picking. No timing. Just one simple decision—and the patience to stick with it.
Buffett explained that it’s not about trying to beat the market. It’s about believing in America and American business—and letting time and compound growth do the work.
That got me thinking: Could investing really be this easy? Was he right?
I dug in and did the research. What I found was overwhelming. This strategy has beaten 95% of professional money managers over the past 20 years. Buffett was right. And other investing legends agree:
- Paul Samuelson called index funds “one of the greatest inventions in finance.”
- Charlie Munger said 95% of wealthy investors would be better off with index funds.
- Even Jordan Belfort called it “the greatest investment hack in history.”
I told my wife I had found the Holy Grail of investing.
She asked, “What’s an S&P 500 index fund?”
That moment made me realize: millions of people could benefit from this strategy—if they just understood what it is and why it works.
That’s why I created this site:
To explain Buffett’s plan in clear, simple terms, backed by evidence and investing wisdom that actually works.

Peter Lynch on What you need to know about the Market—It Drops a Lot - No one knows when this will occur and it's good.
Legendary investor Peter Lynch reminds us that market declines are normal. Every two years, stocks drop 10%, and every six years, they fall 25%. If you can’t handle downturns, you shouldn’t own stocks. But for patient investors, these drops are opportunities—not setbacks. Understanding this is key to long-term investing success.
